Why This Place
For travelers who've done Western Europe and want the version that hasn't been sold yet. Romania delivers medieval, wild, and cheap.
Romania is what the rest of Eastern Europe was before tourists arrived. Carpathian mountains with trails nobody hikes, medieval Transylvanian towns that predate every tourist map, remote monasteries painted with Byzantine frescoes, and some of the cheapest prices in the European Union. The vampire stuff is just the beginning.

Why Backpackers Love It
- The Carpathians are the most underrated mountain range in Europe, and trails go days without seeing another hiker
- Bran Castle, Peleș Palace, Corvin Castle: medieval architecture that makes Western Europe look tame
- Painted monasteries of Bucovina are UNESCO-listed masterpieces hidden in the far north, and almost no one goes
- Sighișoara is one of the last inhabited medieval citadels in Europe, birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, impossibly photogenic
- One of the cheapest countries in the EU: about $33 a day on the ground

Avoid If...
- You want nightlife. It exists but this is more of a nature and culture destination
- You can't handle some language barrier. English is spoken in cities but limited in rural areas
- You need fast train connections, since Romania's rail network is slow but charming
