Cookies and Storage
Effective and last updated
WanderRank doesn't use cookies. It keeps a few things in your browser so your profile, trips and settings are there next time. Here is the full list, and how to change or clear it.
The short version
- WanderRank sets no cookies, and it loads no ad, social media or tracking scripts that would.
- Your profile, travel log, saved trips and settings are kept in your browser, and only after you do something that needs them.
- The analytics (Vercel Web Analytics) use no cookies and store nothing in your browser.
- Mapbox stores a random ID and a cache of map tiles, only after you tap “Load map”.
- Partner sites can set their own cookies once you click through to them.
- There's no cookie banner because there's nothing to ask about except the map, which asks you itself.
What's stored in your browser
| Name | Set by | What it's for | When it's saved | How long | Necessary or choice |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
wanderrank-userLocal storage | WanderRank | Your quiz answers, travel profile, display settings and travel log, so your ranking and your places are there next time. | Only after you answer the quiz, change your profile or log a place. | Until you clear site data. Resetting your profile puts your answers back to the defaults. | Necessary for something you asked for |
wanderrank-tripsLocal storage | WanderRank | Trips you saved in the trip builder. | When you tap Save on a trip. | Until you delete the trip or clear site data. | Necessary for something you asked for |
wanderrank-unitsLocal storage | WanderRank | Whether you see temperatures and distances in US or metric units. | When you switch units. | Until you clear site data. | Necessary for something you asked for |
wanderrank-privacyLocal storage | WanderRank | Your privacy choices: whether analytics are on and whether the map loads without asking. | When you change a privacy choice or tap “Load map”. | Until you change it or clear site data. | Necessary for something you asked for |
wanderrank_support_dismissedLocal storage | WanderRank | Remembers when you closed the tip prompt, so it stays away for 7 days. | When you close the tip prompt (Not now, X or Escape). | Until you clear site data. It only has an effect for 7 days. | Necessary for something you asked for |
wanderrank_support_clickedLocal storage | WanderRank | Remembers when you used a tip link, so the prompt doesn't ask again for 30 days. | When you tap Venmo or a tip amount. | Until you clear site data. It only has an effect for 30 days. | Necessary for something you asked for |
wr_picks_shownLocal storage | WanderRank | Remembers that you closed or used the “My picks” pop-up, so it doesn't show again. | When you close the pop-up or tap one of its picks. | Until you clear site data. | Necessary for something you asked for |
mapbox.eventData.uuid:…, mapbox.eventData.uuidTimestamp:… and mapbox.eventData:…Local storage | Mapbox | A random ID and its creation time, plus the date of Mapbox's daily check. Mapbox sends the ID with each map load to count map use for its statistics and billing. | Only after you tap “Load map”. | Until you clear site data. Mapbox swaps in a new ID once the old one is more than 24 hours old. | Your choice (only if you load the map) |
mapbox-tilesCache storage | Mapbox | Copies of map tiles, map styles and label fonts, so the map you opened loads faster. | Only after you tap “Load map”. | Until the copies expire or you clear site data. | Your choice (only if you load the map) |
“Necessary” items are saved only when you do something that needs them (answer the quiz, save a trip, switch units, make a privacy choice or close a pop-up), and they only serve that. Mapbox's items are saved only if you choose to load the map.
The tip and picks pop-ups decide when to appear by counting pages and clicks in memory, which is forgotten when you leave or reload. Nothing about your browsing is saved for them. The backup map, when it runs, stores nothing.
Analytics without cookies
Vercel Web Analytics counts page views without cookies and without storing anything in your browser. It tells visits apart with a hash of the request that Vercel discards after 24 hours. You can turn it off below, and it's off automatically when your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track. The privacy policy lists exactly what it receives.
Cookies on partner sites
When you follow a link to Amazon, Capital One, Holafly, IMG, Hostelworld or any other site, you're on their site, and their cookies are up to them. Third parties, including Amazon and other advertisers and partners I link to (such as Capital One, and Holafly and IMG through Impact), may serve content and advertisements, collect information directly from visitors, and place or recognize cookies on visitors' browsers. Partners also use cookies to credit WanderRank when you buy something through one of my links. Those cookies are theirs, set under their own policies, and you can manage them on their sites or in your browser. The affiliate disclosure lists every partner.
Change your choices
These choices are saved in this browser only, and they apply everywhere on the site.
Analytics
Counts page views and a few clicks with Vercel Web Analytics. No cookies and nothing saved in your browser. Page addresses are sent without search details, apart from which destination a page is about.
Map (Mapbox)
The adventure map comes from Mapbox. Loading it connects your browser to Mapbox and saves a random ID in this browser, which Mapbox uses to count map loads. With this off, the map asks before it loads. Turning it off doesn't delete an ID Mapbox already saved; clearing everything below does.
Removes your quiz answers, profile, travel log, saved trips, settings, these choices and the ID Mapbox saved. To keep your travel log, export it first from My travels.
Clear what's stored
The quickest way to remove everything WanderRank and Mapbox saved in this browser is the “Clear everything” button in your choices above. Your profile, travel log and saved trips will be gone, so download your travel log from My travels first if you want to keep it. To reset only your quiz answers, use Reset on your Profile page.
