Serbia

Why This Place

Serbia is where backpackers who've 'done' Croatia end up and never want to leave. Cheaper, less crowded, wilder — and the nightlife is genuinely absurd in the best way.

Serbia is the Balkans without the tourist tax. Belgrade's fortress-turned-nightclub scene runs until 9am. Đerdap Gorge is one of Europe's most dramatic river canyons. And you'll eat like a king for $8/day.

Why Backpackers Love It

  • Belgrade nightlife is legally legendary — clubs on river boats open until sunrise
  • Kalemegdan fortress overlooks the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers
  • Đerdap (Iron Gates) Gorge is the most dramatic river canyon in Europe
  • Novi Sad is a smaller, chill university city with the EXIT music festival in summer
  • Serbian food is incredible — ćevapi, pljeskavica, and kajmak everywhere
  • Night buses connect you to Sarajevo, Budva, Sofia — easy Balkan circuit hub

Đerdap Gorge Canyon Hike

Under $5moderatefull day
9.4

Completely unknown outside Serbia. The riverside hiking trail passes Roman fortresses, Byzantine ruins, and the giant face of Decebalus carved into the cliff by a Roman emperor.

Local tip: Bus from Belgrade to Donji Milanovac (3 hrs, $8). The trail to the Roman Kazan viewpoint is 8km one way. The Lepenski Vir archaeological site at the start is extraordinary and free.

Kalemegdan Fortress at Night

Freeeasy2-3 hours
8.8

Free, massive, and extraordinary. At sunset the ramparts fill with Belgrade locals watching the river turn gold. Below the walls, the river club boats start their bass-heavy warmup.

Local tip: The fortress is free always. The Military Museum inside is $2 and underrated. After sunset, walk down to the Savamala neighborhood for the river club scene — dress however, it's Belgrade.

Studenica Monastery Hike

Freeeasyfull day
8.8

One of the most beautiful religious sites in the Balkans that almost no foreign travelers visit. The white marble church and frescoes are UNESCO-listed and genuinely jaw-dropping.

Local tip: Take a bus from Belgrade to Ušće then local taxi. The monastery grounds are free. Dress modestly — it's an active religious site, not a tourist attraction. The monks don't always love cameras pointed at them.
