Why This Place

North Macedonia is for the traveler who has run out of places they haven't been. It genuinely feels undiscovered, because it largely is.

Most people can't find North Macedonia on a map. That's the point. Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe, its shores lined with Byzantine churches that predate most countries, a 2,000-year-old UNESCO old town, and not a tour bus in sight. This is what the Mediterranean looked like before Instagram.

Why Backpackers Love It

  • Lake Ohrid is 3 million years old (one of Europe's rarest ecological treasures) with crystal-clear water you can see 20 meters deep
  • Over 365 churches and monasteries crowd the lakeshore, many carved directly into cliff faces
  • Galičica National Park rises above the lake with trails to viewpoints that will ruin other mountain views for you
  • Canyon Matka near Skopje has a network of caves, a kayakable gorge, and medieval monastery, all reachable by local bus
  • Almost no Western tourists. You'll be the only foreigner in many of the villages.
