Montenegro fits an extraordinary amount into a tiny country. Medieval walled cities on fjord-like bays, Durmitor's glacial lakes and dramatic cliffs, Adriatic beaches that rival anything in Italy, and prices that make Croatia look expensive. Criminally underrated.

👁 Hidden Viewpoint
The walls were built in the 9th-15th centuries. At the top, the view (bay of still water, red-roof city below, limestone mountains above) is one of the most dramatic in Europe. Best at golden hour.

The cliff walls tower over the river the whole way. Multi-day rafting trips camp on the riverbank and are organized from Zabljak in Durmitor National Park. Day trips are also available.

The town of Perast, from which you take a boat ($5 round trip), is frozen in Venetian Baroque time: baroque churches, palazzo ruins, and the clearest, stillest water in the Adriatic. The church interior is covered in 2,500+ donated silver votive tablets over 400 years.
