Montenegro

Why This Place

Montenegro is the Balkans at peak scenery — fjord-like bays, medieval walled cities, and Europe's deepest canyon, all in a country smaller than Connecticut. Perfect shoulder season destination when Croatia is overwhelmed.

Montenegro fits an extraordinary amount into a tiny country. Medieval walled cities on fjord-like bays, Durmitor's glacial lakes and dramatic cliffs, Adriatic beaches that rival anything in Italy, and prices that make Croatia look expensive. Criminally underrated.

Why Backpackers Love It

  • Bay of Kotor is one of the most dramatically beautiful fjord-like bays in Europe
  • Kotor Old Town is a medieval fortress city you can loop in a morning with almost no crowds off-peak
  • Durmitor National Park has glacier lakes, the Tara Canyon (deepest in Europe), and world-class hiking
  • Combine with Albania, Bosnia, or Croatia easily for a Balkan overland trip
  • Hostels are genuinely affordable and social — summer brings a good backpacker crowd
  • Sveti Stefan rock island looks like something from a movie

Kotor City Walls Climb

Under $5moderate2-3 hours
9.5

The walls were built in the 9th-15th centuries. At the top, the view — bay of still water, red-roof city below, limestone mountains above — is one of the most dramatic in Europe. Best at golden hour.

Local tip: Entry is ~€8. Go off-season (May, June, September, October) to have the walls nearly to yourself. Bring water — it gets hot. The hidden San Giovanni fortress at the top has a small church inside.

Tara Canyon Rafting

$15–$40moderate1-3 days
9.5

The canyon makes the Grand Canyon look narrow. Multi-day rafting trips camp on the riverbank and are organized from Zabljak in Durmitor National Park. Day trips are also available.

Local tip: Book directly in Žabljak rather than online — prices are 30% cheaper. The 2-day trip with camping is far better than the day trip. Spring meltwater makes May-June the best months for high water adventure.

Our Lady of the Rocks, Perast

Under $5easy2-3 hours
8.5

The town of Perast, from which you take a boat ($5 round trip), is frozen in Venetian Baroque time — baroque churches, palazzo ruins, and the clearest, stillest water in the Adriatic. The church interior is covered in 2,500+ donated silver votive tablets over 400 years.

Local tip: Perast is 12km from Kotor by local bus ($1). Walk along the waterfront to find the boat operators — don't book through agencies. Sit on the Perast waterfront after with a coffee — it may be the most beautiful village in the Balkans.
