Why This Place

Bulgaria is for the traveler who's done the Balkans circuit and wants to go deeper. Ancient layers, zero hype, absurdly cheap.

Bulgaria is one of the cheapest countries in the EU and one of the most underrated in Europe. Plovdiv's old town sits on seven hills above 8,000 years of layered history (Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Bulgarian Revival) with almost no tourist crowds. The Rhodope mountains are wild and walkable, and Sofia punches well above its weight as a city.

Why Backpackers Love It

  • Plovdiv's old town is one of Europe's most beautiful and least-visited, and a Roman amphitheater sits open in the middle of the city
  • Rila Monastery is an 11th-century wonder hidden in mountain forest, with frescoes that cover every surface
  • The Rhodope mountains have cave systems, waterfalls, and folk villages frozen in time
  • Sofia's Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Vitosha Mountain make for a serious city + nature combo for under $30/day
  • One of the cheapest countries in the EU: street food from about $2, dorms from about $11

Getting There

  • SOFSofiaMain way in
  • PDVPlovdiv

Fly into Sofia. Take a 2-hour train to Plovdiv as your main base.

Fares usually jump in July and August, when the crowds come. May, June, September and October are the sweet spot: good weather without peak prices.

Both open without dates from Atlanta, so you can compare days and months for the cheapest fares. Seasonal notes come from when crowds peak, not live fares.

Getting Around

Trains and buses connect major cities. Sofia and Plovdiv are walkable. Rent a car or take local buses into the Rhodope mountains.

Tip: Sofia metro is modern and cheap. Bolt works everywhere. Bus network is excellent and underrated for exploring the country.

Avoid If...

  • You want a beach-centric trip. Black Sea coast exists but isn't the strength
  • You rely heavily on English, since it's limited outside Sofia and tourist spots
  • You need Western-style infrastructure everywhere
