Why This Place
Budapest is the entry point for Eastern Europe: extremely accessible, excellent value, and the kind of hostel social scene that creates lifelong friendships.
Budapest is the hostel capital of Europe, and for good reason. The city straddles the Danube like an empire that never left. Thermal baths in century-old palatial buildings. Ruin bars carved from abandoned courtyards. Cave systems under the city. The Danube bend to the north. And some of the most social hostel scenes you'll find anywhere.

Why Backpackers Love It
- Széchenyi Thermal Bath is a 100-year-old palatial outdoor pool complex. Soaking in hot spring water in a grand Art Nouveau hall for $15 is one of travel's great pleasures
- Ruin bars like Szimpla Kert are built inside crumbling communist-era buildings with mismatched furniture and art installations, the best bar concept in the world
- Cave hospitals, labyrinth caves, and Buda Castle tunnels give Budapest layers most cities can't match
- Danube Bend at Esztergom and Visegrád is a stunning day trip with castle ruins above the river
- Hostel scene is legendary: Wombat's, Maverick and a long list of social hostels make it easy to meet people
