Taiwan

Why This Place

Taiwan is the most slept-on destination in Asia. Incredible food, dramatic mountains, perfect transit, and locals who will go out of their way to help you. You'll be back.

The most underrated island in Asia. Taipei is the safest, cleanest, most food-obsessed city you've never thought to visit. Mountains cut the middle of the island, the east coast is empty, and night markets make every meal an event.

Why Backpackers Love It

  • Taipei's night markets (Shilin, Raohe) are the greatest street food experience on earth
  • Taroko Gorge — a marble canyon the size of the Grand Canyon, essentially empty
  • Cycling the East Coast Highway is one of the best bike routes in the world
  • Jiufen village in the mountains looks like the set of Spirited Away (because it was)
  • High-speed rail gets you from Taipei to the southern city of Tainan in 90 minutes for $20
  • Incredibly safe — women solo travelers consistently rate it the safest country in Asia

Taroko Gorge Marble Canyon Hike

Freemoderate1-2 days
9.5

Taroko is the size of the Grand Canyon but barely known outside Taiwan. The Zhuilu Old Trail — a 1920s cliff-cut path — has views that will make you question your decisions.

Local tip: The Zhuilu Old Trail requires a permit (free) — book it online 2 days ahead. Stay the night in Tianxiang village inside the gorge.

Jiufen Old Street at Night

FreeeasyHalf day / evening
9.3

Look up 'Jiufen at night' and you'll wonder why you've never heard of it. It feels like walking into an animated film. The cliff-side ocean views from the top are a 10.

Local tip: Take the bus from Taipei (1.5hr). Arrive at sunset and stay into the evening when the lanterns are lit. A-Mei Tea House has the most iconic window view.

East Coast Highway Cycle

$5–$15moderate3-5 days
9.5

This is legitimately one of the best cycling routes in the world. The road hugs the coast, the tunnels have pedestrian paths, and there are hot spring detours every 20km.

Local tip: Rent a bike in Hualien at Giant or Merida. Take the train back from Taitung. Book guesthouses 2 days ahead in peak season.
