Vietnam

Why This Place

Vietnam is the world's greatest backpacker route — riding the Hai Van Pass by motorbike, eating $1 pho from a plastic stool, sleeping in caves, and crossing the whole country by overnight train. Every cliché about it is true.

Vietnam remains one of the world's greatest backpacker destinations — impossibly photogenic landscapes, a legendary food culture built for street eating, one of the best north-to-south overland routes anywhere, and hostels that cost less than a coffee in Atlanta.

Why Backpackers Love It

  • North-to-south overland route is one of the world's great travel routes — train, motorbike, bus all viable
  • Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh are genuinely jaw-dropping — the karst scenery is unlike anything else
  • Vietnamese street food is world-class and costs $1-3 per meal — pho, banh mi, bun bo hue
  • Renting a motorbike and riding the Hai Van Pass is a rite of passage
  • Phong Nha caves (Son Doong area) are among the largest cave systems on earth
  • Hostel social scene in Hanoi, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City is incredibly active

Worth The Detour· side quests

Hai Van Pass by Motorbike

Under $5moderateHalf day
9.5

The train goes through a tunnel now, so most visitors miss it entirely. The pass itself has an abandoned French/American war bunker at the summit with panoramic views. You'll have it nearly to yourself on weekday mornings.

Local tip: Rent a motorbike in Hội An or Đà Nẵng ($5-8/day) and ride north. The abandoned war structures at the summit are free to explore. Stop at Lang Co beach on the descent — empty and beautiful.

Phong Nha Cave & Dark Cave

$5–$15moderateHalf day
9.8

Phong Nha National Park contains the world's largest cave system — Son Doong could fit a 40-story skyscraper inside. The Dark Cave experience is essentially a theme park built inside a living geological wonder, and it costs $15.

Local tip: The Dark Cave ($15) is worth it over the more famous Phong Nha boat tour. Rent a bike from Phong Nha town to the cave entrance ($2). Avoid rainy season — flood closures are frequent.

Tam Coc Bamboo Boat

$5–$15easy3-4 hours
9.2

Tam Coc is often called the inland Ha Long Bay — and it earns that comparison. The boat passes through flooded tunnels and emerges into valleys ringed by cliffs. The rowers are often older women with extraordinary technique. It's meditative and surreal.

Local tip: Hire the standard boat ($5) rather than the kayak add-on. Avoid the vendors who row alongside — just say no and they'll leave. Rent a bike afterward to explore Bich Dong pagoda and the surrounding valley on your own.

Mù Cang Chải Rice Terraces

$5–$15moderate2-3 days
9.8

These are arguably more dramatic than Sapa's terraces — and without the tourist infrastructure. The villages are H'Mong minority communities where women still wear traditional indigo-dyed clothing as everyday dress. Getting here requires commitment, which keeps it genuinely off-track.

Local tip: Overnight bus from Hanoi to Nghĩa Lộ (~$10), then a motorbike taxi to Mù Cang Chải. Rent a motorbike locally and self-explore. A local guide is useful for reaching the more remote terraces that don't appear on maps.
