Why This Place

Fly via Bangkok BKK or connect from Chiang Mai CNX (1hr). Or take the 2-day Mekong slow boat from Thailand's border.
Fares usually jump in December and January, when the crowds come. February, March and November are the sweet spot: good weather without peak prices.

Getting Around
Slow boat on the Mekong is iconic and worth it. Buses and minivans connect cities. Laos rail now runs Vientiane to the border.
