Jordan

Why This Place

Jordan is the Middle East made accessible — Petra at dawn before any other humans arrive, Wadi Rum's red desert canyons under a star-filled sky, and a slot canyon hike that even experienced travelers somehow miss.

Jordan is the Middle East's most accessible and traveler-friendly destination. Petra alone justifies the trip, but Wadi Rum's red desert canyons, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba's diving make this a genuinely stacked country. The Jordan Pass makes budget travel feasible.

Why Backpackers Love It

  • Petra at dawn, before the crowds arrive, is one of the most powerful travel moments possible
  • Wadi Rum desert camping under a star-filled sky is genuinely otherworldly
  • The Jordan Trail is a multi-day hiking route through some of the most dramatic desert scenery on earth
  • Wadi Mujib — hiking through a slot canyon in ankle-deep water — is a hidden gem even experienced travelers miss
  • Jordanians are famously hospitable — invitations to tea and food happen constantly
  • One of the safest countries in the Middle East for independent travel

Worth The Detour· side quests

Wadi Mujib Siq Trail

$5–$15moderate3-4 hours
9.5

Most travelers go to Wadi Rum and Petra and miss this entirely. The Siq trail is a 2-hour wade through Biblical-looking stone canyon with waterfalls, pools, and no tour groups. The canyon eventually opens at a waterfall where you swim back.

Local tip: Reserve online through the RSCN website ($21 entry). Bring waterproof bags for everything. Life jackets provided. Don't go during flash flood season or after heavy rain — the canyon can flood quickly.

Petra by Night & Treasury at Dawn

$15–$40moderate2 days
10.0

Petra by Night operates Monday/Wednesday/Thursday — it's the version of the Treasury experience that no photo has prepared you for. The dawn run (arrive 6am) means you'll have the Treasury to yourself before the 9am crowds. Petra is genuinely one of the most extraordinary places on earth.

Local tip: Buy the 2-day pass ($55) — Petra requires 2 days to see beyond the Treasury. The Monastery (Ad-Deir) hike is 850 steps but larger and less crowded than the Treasury. Petra by Night ($17) on top of entry is worth it for one of the evenings.

Wadi Rum Desert Camping

$15–$40easy1-2 nights
10.0

Wadi Rum is the most cinematic landscape on earth — The Martian, Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars, and Dune have all filmed here. But seeing it in person makes every frame make sense: the silence is total, the color is blood orange, and the night sky is extraordinary.

Local tip: Book a Bedouin camp directly rather than through Aqaba agencies — you'll get a better experience and price ($40-70 pp including dinner). Specify 'authentic' camp vs. the luxury bubble domes — different vibe entirely. The sunrise from the dunes needs a 5am start.
