Why This Place

Armenia is for the traveler who wants to feel like they're actually discovering something, because they are. This country deserves a fraction of the attention Turkey gets.

Armenia is one of the world's oldest Christian nations, squeezed between Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran, and it has the landscape and monuments to show for 3,000 years of history. Monastery complexes carved into vertical cliff faces. Mountain roads that go to nowhere in particular. Wine that predates Rome. And Yerevan (a pink-tinted Soviet city with a mountain view that makes no sense) as the base.

Why Backpackers Love It

  • Tatev Monastery perches on a cliff above a 300-meter gorge, accessible via the world's longest non-stop reversible cable car
  • Geghard Monastery is partially carved directly into a mountain, a 4th-century UNESCO site with zero tourist facilities and zero crowds
  • Mount Ararat dominates the horizon from Yerevan despite being in Turkey, and the imagery is haunting and inescapable
  • Armenia's Areni-1 cave holds the oldest known winery, and winery tours in the Areni region cost almost nothing
  • One of the oldest Christian countries on earth (301 AD), with monasteries that make Italian churches look new

Getting There

  • EVNYerevan

Fly into Yerevan (EVN) via Istanbul, Dubai, or Moscow. Taxi from airport to city is $5 on the app.

Fares usually jump in July and August, when the crowds come. May, June, September and October are the sweet spot: good weather without peak prices.

Both open without dates from Atlanta, so you can compare days and months for the cheapest fares. Seasonal notes come from when crowds peak, not live fares.

Getting Around

Yerevan has cheap metro and marshrutkas (minibuses). Renting a car (~$25/day) is the best way to reach monasteries and mountain villages. Shared taxis to Gyumri and Dilijan.

Airport to town

  • bus
    Bus #201 to Republic Square
    $0.5040 min
  • rideshare
GG Taxi (local Uber-like) to Yerevan center
    $3–520 min

Key routes

Tip: Renting a car ($25–40/day) is by far the best way to explore Armenia, since monasteries and landscapes are spread out and buses are infrequent.

Avoid If...

  • You need an established backpacker trail. It's a pioneer destination, infrastructure is limited
  • Political tensions concern you: research Armenia-Azerbaijan situation before visiting
  • You want reliable English, since Russian is more useful outside Yerevan
