India is not a destination. It's a confrontation with everything you assumed about how the world works
US travel advisory: Level 2 of 4, Exercise increased caution
Because of crime and terrorism, including sexual assault at tourist sites, do not travel to Jammu and Kashmir (except eastern Ladakh and Leh), the India-Pakistan border, Manipur or the Maoist-affected parts of central and east India, and don't cross the India-Nepal border by land.

Why This Place
India is not a destination. It's a confrontation with everything you assumed about how the world works. Come ready for that.
India breaks every traveler open. Rishikesh sits at the point where the Ganges pours out of the Himalayas: a tangle of ashrams, yoga shalas, white-water rafting, suspension bridges, and temples that have been active for thousands of years. The Beatles came here to find themselves. You'll understand why when you're watching the evening Aarti ceremony on the river.

Why Backpackers Love It
- White-water rafting the Ganges through Class III-IV rapids with Himalayan peaks on both sides
- The evening Aarti ceremony at Triveni Ghat (priests with fire, bells, and thousands of worshippers) is one of the most powerful things you'll ever witness
- The Beatles' Ashram (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's) is now an abandoned jungle-covered ruin you can explore freely
- Day hikes to Kunjapuri Temple at sunrise with 360-degree Himalayan views above the clouds
- India's price floors are incomparable: $8/day for accommodation and food is genuinely achievable

Getting There
- DEDDehradun
Fly into Dehradun (DED) and take a 45-minute taxi to Rishikesh. Or fly to Delhi and take a 6-hour overnight bus, cheaper and authentic.
Fares usually jump in March and April, when the crowds come. February, October and November are the sweet spot: good weather without peak prices.
Both open without dates from Atlanta, so you can compare days and months for the cheapest fares. Seasonal notes come from when crowds peak, not live fares.
Getting Around
Within Rishikesh, walk or take shared autos. Buses and shared jeeps to Haridwar, Mussoorie, and further Himalayan valleys. Night trains to Delhi.

Avoid If...
- You struggle with sensory overload. India is everything at maximum volume at all times
- You need consistent infrastructure. Power cuts, slow internet, and chaos are part of it
- Monsoon season (July-September): Rishikesh gets heavy flooding
