Why This Place
Ethiopia is for the traveler who wants something that defies every category. One of the oldest Christian countries, the birthplace of coffee, a landscape that belongs on Mars. Check the advisory first: most of the headline sights are in regions the US says not to travel to right now.
Ethiopia has 12th-century churches carved vertically down into solid rock that predate most of Europe's cathedrals. Its highlands rise to 4,000 meters with trekking routes through villages where ox-drawn plows are still the norm. Its capital Addis is a city of 5 million that feels like it's being invented in real time. Ethiopia was never colonized (Italy occupied it for five years, 1936 to 1941), and it shows in every cultural layer.

Why Backpackers Love It
- The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela are some of the most astonishing buildings anywhere. Right now Lalibela is in a region the US says not to travel to, with fighting nearby, so check the advisory before you plan around it
- Simien Mountains National Park has trails through volcanic pinnacles and gelada baboons found only in Ethiopia, but it's in Amhara, where the US says not to travel right now
- Ethiopian coffee ceremony is a 45-minute ritual of roasting, grinding, and serving three rounds: the origin of the world's coffee, performed with hospitality that humbles you
- The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest, lowest places on earth. The US do-not-travel zone along Afar's border with Eritrea leaves it out, but all of Ethiopia is at Level 3 (reconsider travel), so read the advisory before you book a tour
- Ethiopia uses its own ancient calendar, alphabet, and time system, so you'll feel genuinely transported

Getting There

- LLILalibela
Ethiopian Airlines hub, surprisingly well connected. Domestic flights are cheap, but check which regions are safe to fly into first.
Fares usually jump in January, when the crowds come. February, March, October and November are the sweet spot: good weather without peak prices.
Both open without dates from Atlanta, so you can compare days and months for the cheapest fares. Seasonal notes come from when crowds peak, not live fares.
Getting Around
Domestic flights are essential for covering distances, since roads are rough. Ethiopian Airlines domestics are affordable. Check the advisory before flying anywhere outside Addis: Lalibela and Gondar are in Amhara, where the US says not to travel right now.

Avoid If...
- You need reliable internet, since connectivity is genuinely poor outside Addis
- Armed conflict worries you: the US says not to travel to Amhara, Tigray, most of Oromia and several border areas right now, which rules out Lalibela, Gondar and the Simien Mountains
- You want easy solo navigation, since this rewards travelers with a guide or at least thorough research
