Why This Place

For the traveler who wants Central America without the Costa Rica prices or Guatemala crowds. Nicaragua rewards people who show up curious and stay flexible.

Nicaragua is Central America's most underrated destination: cheaper than Costa Rica, wilder than Guatemala, and almost entirely off the backpacker radar. Active volcanoes you can hike and board down, colonial cities with zero crowds, giant freshwater lakes, and a Pacific coast surfers have been quietly hoarding for years.

Why Backpackers Love It

  • Volcano boarding down Cerro Negro: go with an operator that gives you a suit, goggles and a helmet, and go as slow as you want
  • Ometepe Island rises from a freshwater lake as twin volcanic cones, one of the most surreal landscapes in the hemisphere
  • Granada and León are among the best-preserved Spanish colonial cities in the Americas with almost no tourist crowds
  • Pacific surf breaks like Playa Maderas and Las Peñitas are world-class and nearly empty compared to Costa Rica
  • One of the cheapest countries in Central America, with prices that feel like Southeast Asia

Getting There

  • MGAManagua

Fly into Managua then take a chicken bus or shuttle to Granada (1hr) or León (1.5hr).

Fares usually jump in December and January, when the crowds come. February, March and November are the sweet spot: good weather without peak prices.

Both open without dates from Atlanta, so you can compare days and months for the cheapest fares. Seasonal notes come from when crowds peak, not live fares.

Getting Around

Chicken buses cover the entire country cheaply. Shuttles to tourist towns are ~$15-20. Taxi boats to Ometepe from San Jorge.

Airport to town

  • taxi
    to Managua center
    $10–1520 min

Key routes

Tip: Chicken buses are the backbone: slow but real. Tourist shuttles connect Granada/León/Ometepe for backpackers at $15–25.
