Why This Place
El Salvador is for the traveler who wants Central America without paying for Guatemala's polish or Costa Rica's prices. Come before everyone else figures it out.
El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America and its most underrated. The Pacific surf coast has been quietly discovered by surfers and the tourism industry hasn't caught up. Volcanic crater lakes you can swim in, colonial towns with zero gringos, cloud forest hikes, and prices close to Nicaragua's, all in a country that's half the size of West Virginia.

Why Backpackers Love It
- El Salvador uses the US dollar, so absolutely zero currency friction for American travelers
- Surf breaks like Punta Roca and El Tunco offer world-class Pacific waves for all skill levels
- Santa Ana Volcano hike ends at a turquoise crater lake, one of Central America's most dramatic short hikes
- Ruta de las Flores winds through coffee farms, weekend markets, and waterfall villages virtually no tourists visit
- Short, often cheap flights from the US East Coast: good deals from Atlanta run about $350 to $450 round trip

Getting There
- SALSan Salvador
Fly into San Salvador (SAL). Shuttle buses to El Tunco surf coast (1.5hr) or Santa Ana (1hr) leave from various hostels.
Fares usually jump in December and January, when the crowds come. February to April and November are the sweet spot: good weather without peak prices.
Both open without dates from Atlanta, so you can compare days and months for the cheapest fares. Seasonal notes come from when crowds peak, not live fares.
Getting Around
Chicken buses and microbuses cover the whole country cheaply. Shuttles between tourist towns for $10-15. Grab works in San Salvador.

Avoid If...
- Safety concerns are a dealbreaker. Gang violence has dropped sharply since 2022, but under the ongoing State of Exception police can arrest anyone suspected of gang ties, and several US citizens are being held without trial. Read the US advisory first
- You need Spanish, since English is very limited outside surf communities
- You want a polished tourism infrastructure, because it's genuinely raw
